Biography

Evita Andújar is a Spanish painter with an academic background, born in Écija (Seville) in 1974. For many years she has lived in Rome, where, nourished by the suggestions of seventeenth-century baroque painting, she researches the potential of figurative art beyond skilful technique, reaching a personal style of enveloping and aesthetic lyricism. The identity of the female figures painted by Andújar dissolves into a liquid doubleness that hides their face, making them universal entities, like Leopardi's Silvia, who ceases to be Teresa Fattorini, also alluding to the feminine essence in a broad sense, in relation to fleeting nature of life. If the German philosopher Thomas Macho calls twentieth-century society facial society - that is, a reality determined by the mass media where the face is omnipresent but produces nothing other than new and glacial masks, like a senseless carnival in Ensor, hiding the face for Andújar it can be a refuge, in the name of the inscrutability of the dream dimension in Magritte.
